Since the day Ma Zu was being witnessed by the people in her hometown on her Immortality-gaining, myths & stories of Ma Zu appearing to assist the people that met with sea-disasters had been spreading around.

In Song & Ming Dynasty, the number of followers of Ma Zu was tremendously great and this not only happened in China, but also in other neighbouring Countries.

Due to the Miracles that Ma Zu had produced during these 2 Dynasties, various Emperors had bestowed her with a lot of Official Titles & Praising Incantation.

With all these bestowing, it somehow had aided to the popularity of Ma Zu.

Ma Zu Couplet Sharing No. 1 (天上聖母媽祖對聯分享之一)

This Couplet explained how Ma Zu was being born into this Mortal Realm.

One night after Ma Zu’s Mother dreamt of The Dipper Lords of the Great Northern Dipper (夢北斗而受孕), she started to get pregnant and after 10 months of pregnancy, Ma Zu was born on the 23rd Day of Lunar 3 Month in Song Dynaty AD 960 (宋朝建隆元年农历三月廿三日宋朝建隆元年农历三月廿三日), which later was given the name of Lin Mo Niang (林默娘) – literally translated as the Quiet Maiden.

Since young, Mo Niang was quite intelligent and whenever she was given a new book or scripture, she was able to memorize it and understand the meaning within a short period.

Soon when Mo Niang reached 8 years old, she dreamt of a Lady wearing Purple & emitted out great bright rays (夢一夫人身著紫衣兼大放金光) approaching her and passed her a few books that bear a few very rare & precious skills. From then onwards, Mo Niang never stop practising the Skills that were being imparted to her.

At the age of 28, while Mo Niang was at one Taoist Monasteries to pay her respect to the Deities, she came to Dou Mu Hall (
斗姆閣) and while in there, she realised that the Lady appeared in her dream while she was 8 years old, was actually Dou Mu (斗姆元君). And on that very night, Mo Niang had another dream and this time round, Dou Mu appeared in her actual form to meet up with Mo Niang, informing Mo Niang that her time was up for performing her Salvation task in the Three Realms.

On Song Dynasty AD 987, 9th Day of Lunar 9 Month (
宋雍熙四年九月初九日得道), Mo Niang got her Immortality at the Highest Peak of her hometown in Fujian Mei Zhou Island (福建湄州島).

PS: In Song Dynasty, Taoism greatly promoted the Culture of Dou Mu and this was why, Ma Zu was closely associated with Dou Mu. During that Era, special Rituals/Ceremonies had been written/composed dedicating to Dou Mu and in later-part, certain Rituals/Ceremonies were being copied over to Non-Taoist Faiths.

Manifestation Anniversary of Ma Zu 2013 (癸巳蛇年天上聖母媽祖華誕)

Ma Zu aka The Immortal Maiden or Heavenly Empress of the Sea, in Taoism, we addressed her as Tian Shang Sheng Mu Ma Zu (天上聖母媽祖).

According to Taoist Scripture, the Only & Official Tao...ist Scripture dedicating to Ma Zu, known as Tai Shang Lao Jun Shuo Tian Fei Jiu Ku Ling Yan Jing (太上老君說天妃救苦靈驗經), Ma Zu was actually the Manifestation of the Energy from the Great North Dipper Star Group into a Lady Immortal (known as Miao Xing Yu Nv 妙行玉女) which had overcome multiple testing & obstacles before gaining her Immortal-hood.

After which, Miao Xing Yu Nv was called upon by the Supreme Lord (道德天尊) to the gathering for the appointment of the task to descend into the Mortal Realm to perform the necessary Salvation for the Suffering Beings.

Upon getting the appointment, Miao Xing Yu Nv made her Sincerest & Greatest Vow of ceasing of ALL Sufferings before she returned back to the Celestial Realm again and so, upon getting the Vow, Miao Xing Yu Nv was being sent off to get her Re-incarnation aka Manifestated into Mortal at Song Dynasty Jia Shen Year 23rd Day of Lunar 3 Month (AD 960宋朝建隆元年农历三月廿三日) in the Lin Family (降生莆田湄洲岛林家之中) – given Maiden Name as Lin Mo or Lin Mo Niang (林默/林默娘).

Since young, Mo Niang had been going around to assist the Needy, regardless of strangers or people she knew.

By the age of 8, one day while Mo Niang was out in the Sea-side to waiting for her father to return from the Sailing, a Elegant Lady approached her and passed her a few Books on Unknown Writings & Diagrams. Upon getting hold of the Books, Mo Niang was puzzled but after getting some advises from the Lady, Mo Niang accepted and promised the Lady to study all the information in the Books and understand the Diagrams.

By the age of 16, Mo Niang was able to use the Skills that mentioned in the Unknown Books to assist more Needy in her Hometown.

At the age of 28, on the 8th Night of Lunar 9 Month, Mo Niang got a dream from the Elegant Lady again, this time round Mo Niang finally knew who she was – Zi Guang Fu Ren (紫光夫人). After getting the advises from Zi Guang Fu Ren, Mo Niang decided to leave home on the 9th Day of Lunar 9 Month to gain her Immortal-hood at the Highest Peak in her hometown.

On Song Dynasty AD 987, 9th Day of Lunar 9 Month (宋雍熙四年九月初九日得道), Mo Niang got her Immortal-hood and was summoned back to the Celestial Realm to receive her Official Title before she was being sent back to the Mortal Realm to assist the Needy again.

In Southern Taoism Culture, Ma Zu was a highly respect Lady Immortal by the Taoists & also Chinese. Every year, during her Manifestation Anniversary, ALL Temples that dedicated to Ma Zu in Southern China will conduct Supreme Rituals/Ceremonies to honour Ma Zu as a form of Gratitude for her hardship in Salvaging the Sufferings & Blessings.

Till today, in Hokkien Pu Tian Mei Zhou County (中國福建省莆田湄州), on the 23rd Day of Lunar 3 Month, tons & tons of Devotees will flocked to the Main Ancestral Temple of Ma Zu to pay their respect to her in-order to request for Blessing through-out the Year.

In Year 2013, Ma Zu Anniversary falls on 02 May, a Thursday.

So in Singapore, what can Oneself do to honour Ma Zu?

For Taoists, we can just prepare the Taoist 5 Offerings/10 Offerings (道教五供/十供) to honour Ma Zu as these Offerings can consider as the Highest Respect in Taoist Culture.

Five Offerings Intro:

http://javewutaoismplace.blogspot.sg/2012/11/introduction-of-taoist-five-offerings.html

Besides that, Oneself can add in some Traditional Cake/Cookies (傳統糕點) stuffs such as Longevity Peach Buns (壽桃包), Longevity Noodles (壽麵), Huat Kueh (發糕), Ang Ku Kueh (紅龜粿) & Ang Ee (紅圓包).

As for the Paper Offerings, actually for us Taoists, we can save up the Paper Offerings, as long as Oneself is able to prepare 3 sticks of Good Long Incenses and a pair of 24hours Red Candles for Ma Zu, Oneself and the whole Family will be Blessed.

Due to Ma Zu had made her Greatest Vow to Salvage the Mortals, the Honouring shall be Simple and filled with Sincerity, rather than Grand but Commercializing.

And One that WE ALL must remember to do while preparing any form of Offerings for Ma Zu. Remember to prepare the following Label (print out on Pink or Red Paper) and stick onto any form of Offerings that dedicated to Ma Zu. This is an Old Traditional method of Honouring Ma Zu while Oneself is making certain Request or Blessing. By doing so, Oneself’s Name & Address will be recorded by the 2 Generals of Ma Zu and whenever Oneself needed the assistance of them, just by Calling Ma Zu’s Name of Title, she will be there to provide the assistance.

Ma Zu Official Title Label (do remember to write your name & address at the blank space at the bottom of the Label):

Please proceed to this link for the Title Label:

So in Singapore, where can Oneself honour Ma Zu?

In Singapore, there are quite a number of Old Temples that Oneself can visit to Honour Ma Zu, in the following is the List of Temples:

1 Yue Hai Qing Temple located at Phillip Street (粵海清廟)
2 Tian Fu Gong located at Amoy Street (天福宮)
3 Ban Gang Tian Hou Temple located at Sengkang (半港天后宮)
4 Sembawang Tian Hou Temple located at Admiralty Road (三巴旺天后宮)

6 Wan Shou Shan Guan Yin Tang located at Telok Blangah Height infront of Blk 54 (萬壽山觀音堂)
7 Hainan Association Tian Hou Temple located at Beach Road (海南會館天后宮)

Last of All, may Tian Shang Sheng Mu Ma Zu bestowed her Blessing to ALL and hope that the World will have lesser Disaster in the next 1 year.

Consecration of Singapore Pioneer Tan Quee Lan's Tomb 2013 (新加坡先賢陳桂蘭老先生新墳謝土安龍儀式)

On 21 April, a Sunday, Jave was being engaged by the descendants of Sire Tan Quee Lan - one of our Singapore Pioneers, to conduct the Consecration of the newly refurnished Tomb.

Really honoured to have a chance to serve our Singapore Pioneer after that they had left this Mortal Realm.

Even though the weather was bad on that day, but all of us enjoyed the Ceremony.

A million thanks to Sis Serene Tan (great-granddaughter of Sire Tan Quee Lan) for allowing Jave to conduct this Special Ceremony dedicated to her Ancestors.

Short intro on Taoist Spiritual Notice (道教榜文簡介)

Bang Wen (榜文) or known as Public Notice, was used by the Imperial Court in the Ancient Era for the announcing of certain important notices to the Citizens or Public of the Country/Kingdom.

Bang Wen was founded in Shang Dynasty (最早出現與商朝) and later being widely used in Qin Dynasty (而後在秦朝被高度使用).

In the earlier days, Bang Wen was known as Gao Wen (榜文最早被稱之為告文) – literally known as Notice of Informing (顧名思義為告訴/告知之意).

In Han Dynasty (漢朝), Bang Wen was being commonly used by the Imperial Court & District Officers for making Daily Notices to the Public.

When Heavenly Master Zhang Dao Ling (正一張祖天師) restructured/reform Taoism, he had imported in Bang Wen as part of the Culture for the announcing of Spiritual Notices to the Three Realms (告示三界) – Heavenly, Earthly aka Mortal Realm & Waterly Realm.

During Eastern Jin Dynasty, with the help of Lu Xiu Jing (陸修靜) and a few others Taoist High Masters, restructuring & standardised the Taoist Rituals & Ceremonies, from then, Bang Wen had transformed into another small version Petition form for Burning during Taoist Rituals & Ceremonies.

In Tang Dynasty (唐朝), the smaller version Bang Wen was being widely used and in Song Dynasty (宋朝), it had become a common use for Taoist Priests.

During Yuan Dynasty (元朝), which China was being conquered by the Mongolian (蒙古入主中原), Taoist Bang Wen & Spiritual Petitions (疏文) were being instructed to add in the Mongolian Languages (加入文). And at this Dynasty, Bang Wen’s header had added another Title known as Wu Shang Hun Yuan Zong Tan (無上混元宗壇), which later belongs to Quan Zhen Sect (全真宗). From then, there were 2 Titles being seen on Bang Wen, Spiritual Petition & other Spiritual Notices (牒文) (another is Wan Fa Zong Tan 萬法宗壇, which belongs to Zheng Yi Sect 正一宗).

By Ming Dynasty (明朝), all Taoist Rituals and Ceremonies were being standardised and most of the format of Bang Wen, Spiritual Petitions & Notices were being recorded in Taoist Canon (道藏), which allowed the Taoist Descendants to refer too when need in the newer generation.

In Qing Dynasty (清朝) & Min Guo Era (民國), due to wars (戰爭) and revolutions (革命暴動), a lot of such records were lost or destroyed, which led to only certain records of Bang Wen, etc, could be seen or found.

In the 60s, after all wars & revolutions, many older High Priests/Masters had decided to share their knowledge & collection, which somehow allowed the lineage of Taoism to be continued till today. We really appreciate that all these Elders shared their knowledge at that time, if not, many of the knowledge will be gone.

Last but not least, in here, you all will be seeing an example of the Official Taoist Notice that being used in Taoist Salvation Ritual. As you all can see that the Ritual’s Title is being included at the Header (靈寶大法司), followed by what is the objective of this Ritual (青玄資度齋壇), then the address of the Ceremonial Premises, the Scriptures to be Chanted (三官妙經/等等), Date of the Notice being issued (道曆某某) and last, the most important part, the Leading Priests’ Titles & signing off (上清大洞/五雷某某及花印). Without the Titles & Signing off, this Spiritual Notice will not be considered Official or “Accepted”.
