Dotting Sharing Series 01: Spotting the Bad Dottings for Statues (歹式開光簡介)

Upon request on the Choosing & Dotting of Statues, in this Write-up, I will like to share with ALL of you on the Bad types of Dotting Ceremonies.

From here, hope that most of you will be able to learn & understand more on the various types of Dotting and how it will cause After-effect from such Bad Dotting for the Statues.

For Dotting of Statues, Oneself must remember to only engaged the following groups of Masters to perform it, other than the following groups, the rest are not Eligible and Qualified for the Dotting:

1) Taoist Priests (道長/道士/高功) with training for 3 years and above

2) Taoist Masters (not being granted as being a Priests 法師), with training of at least 8-10 years and above

3) Taoist Teachers (not being classified as Taoist Master yet 道教/道學老師), with training of at least 12-20 years and above

How to check whether are they the Official Groups of Masters?

1) By looking at the Layout of the Altars that belongs to them. On an Official Taoist Master's Altar, other than Taoist Deities, there wont be any other Religions' Deities being honoured.

2) By the Speech and Conversation. A Trained Taoist Master will only Respect ALL Religions but never do Preaching or Introduction on other Religions other than Own Taoist Culture & Teachings.

3) By the Engagement Fees that they request. For People who request High Pricing, Additional Charges on Un-necessary Items or other Services included, etc, please do not Engaged them. Cos mostly such People are just using the Name of Religions to make Money on Folks.

Groups that Oneself shall not Engaged

1) Geomancy Masters who claimed that they know Dotting for Statues. Official Geomancy Masters will not performed such Rituals/Ceremonies unless they are being Granted as a Taoist Priest or Taoist Master.

2) Religious Teachers who involved in Multiple Religious Activities. Such Religious Teachers are just trying to make things complicated and messy, so do not engaged them. Worst is those who claimed that they are able to Call-upon the Energies from other Space to enhance onto the Statues, etc.

3) Non Taoist Masters. Dotting is a Typical & Traditional Taoist Skill. Other then Taoist Masters, NO other Masters are able to perform the Dotting for a Taoist Deity, so please do take NOTE.

4) Optional Case: For those who engaged Mediums to perform Dotting, please be aware of the Changes of the Statues. After 10-12 years, please do engaged a Taoist Priest to perform at least a Round of Chanting for the Statues (Deities) during the Manifestation Anniversary aka Birthday or during the Thanksgiving Ceremony at the End of Lunar Year (16th Day of Lunar 12 Month 答謝神恩)

From the Duration/Timing of Dotting, we can somehow Predict whether is it a Good or Bad Dotting

A Proper Dotting for a Statue will at least take 45 minutes to An Hour to complete.

From the Cleaning, Cleansing, Reporting, Invitation, Dotting, Chanting & last, Giving Offering, it will at least needed sometime to complete the Full Cycle of an Official Dotting Ceremony.

For a Dotting which is less than 3 minutes, we can somehow predict that things will happened within 3 years or a Cycle of 12 years.

Dottings that are NOT being conducted on a Selected Good Date, usually After-effects will be seen immediately, such as Paint-dropped, Statues starting to Crack or Worst, parts of the Statues starting to drop or break-off.

From the Statues, we can see the Bad Dotting's After-effect

1) By the Face-color of the Statues. Usually the Statue will tend to turn Pale, White, Green or Black (as show in the picture below). Such Statues are actually being "Badly Dotted" and can said that the Master who performed the Dotting is NOT a Trained-one or NOT an Official One.

When Oneself found out that the Face-color of the Statues started to change, please do try to engage a Taoist Master to do the Sending-off immediately and then, Cleansing and New-round of Inviting of New Statues must be Done.

2) The Facial Expression of the Statues Changed. Usually will be from Compassionate or Cheerful becoming Fierce, Scary or even having Poppy-eyes. Such Statues are known as being Possessed by Negative Entities. During the Possession Period, the Family Members tend to fall Sick easily or Arrguements keep happening in the House. Immediate Actions will be needed.

3) Always seeing Dark Mist covering the Statues. For those who are Sensitive, they might be able to sense this, a Thin Layer of Dark Mist surrounding the Statues. Everytime by passing by the Altars or Offering Incenses, the Dark Mist will appeared Infront, On-top or at the Sides of the Statues, such Statues are known as Empty Statues, meaning any form of Wanderings that Pass-by can just "Check-in for a Night". And so, Immediate Actions will also be needed.

4) Cracks or Damages started to appear. Such Statues are considered Weak and "Unhealthy" and so, best suggestions will be Changing New ones.

How to Dispose such Bad Dotted Statues?

If Oneself engaged a Taoist Master, usually the Masters will handle on the Disposing.

If not, Oneself can choose a Good Day, Good Morning (7.00-9.00Am), then cover the Statues with Red-paper and then bring down to Burn-off with at least 9 Stacks of Gold-incense-paper.

Another way will be sending them to Temples and request the Temple-keepers to perform the Disposing for Oneself.

Summarizing

Recent Years, due to Commercialization of Religions, many Un-trained People are trying to "ACT" as Official Masters in performing various Rituals/Ceremonies and this leads to Distorting & Degrading of many of the Upright Religions & Teaching, especially our Root Religion - Taoism.

Due to Taoism was founded very Long Ago and also the Non-unity-ness of some Schools, Taoism tend to become Weaker and "Fragile" and so, many Con-men started using the Opportunities to make a Living.

Surviving is Important, Feeding Mouths in Family is a Must but never because of such Reasons, using Religions as a Tool to make Money.

For the Past 30 years, a Great Down-fall in the Percentage of Taoism is occuring in the Whole World. Reasons, due to Commercialization, exisiting of the Non-Trained People and Proper Preaching is not being Well-done.

In-order for our Root Religion & Culture to stay as Long as it can in this Mortal Realm, we must do our BEST to retain the Uprightness and Truthfulness of it.

How to?

First step you can do is, by Stop Engaging the Wrong Person to perform the Right Task.

Last of ALL, hope that for the next few Generations, our Descendants can still enjoy the Blessing of Taoism and also, encountering Wonderful Preaching that being Pass-down by our Taoist Ancestors.

What areas to look for to see whether isit a bad dotting. After reading your articles , i think i should go and explore the statues liao. Haha. You know what i mean hor.

  4. Thus people say do not anyhow take back statues from temples.

People send their statues to temple for a reason. One of my friend's dad went to invite a guanyin statue from a temple. His dad ended up fell sick seriously and passed away eventually after a few years.

  5. Very interesting to see impact of poor doting

  6. Hi Shifu, I don't understand the sentence "First step you can do is, by Engaging the Wrong Person to perform the Right Task."
Why "engaging wrong person" instead of the right one?

    Warm regards,
    Yang

  7. This Picture was being shared by a Taoist Master who being engaged to check on the Family's Luck and upon reaching the House, the 1st thing he saw was this Statue that sits on the Main Altar. After checking, immediate action was being taken to "get rid" of it as this Statue was not being Dotted Correctly.

If you will to see carefully, the Forehead and Hands turn Blue-black but the Eye-brows & Nails stayed clean. This is the Strange Part.

    ReplyDelete
  8. The Eyes also. If a Statue's Eyes started to look DULL or Strange, then its time to take some actions.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yes, usually for those who wanted to collect OLD Statues, before carrying them home, a quick Ceremony needed to conducted to cleanse the Statues. Once such Cleansing is DONE, then more or less the Statue will be SAFE for keeping.

  10. Dear Bro,

They are More, will try to share more with you all next time.

For some Temples in Singapore, the Main Statues also ended up in this states. But it is quite sensitive to point out which Temples.

  11. Hi Yang,

Sorry about that, shall be "STOP engaging", the word Stop was not shown due to the Big Caps.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Its actually very dangerous to ask someone not "right" to dot statue as in the future issues will happen to the person who honour that statue...as I have experience personally myself before...very scary... =(

Something to add on, to tell if that statue/s have already "Tui Ling", one part is from the eyes...the eyes will seem to be "dead" (no life) if the energy of that statue have already gone and prayers will not be heard/answered, etc. Seen a few temples that have happened this issue, one has more than 5 "Tui Ling" statues...which is quite sad to see...

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yes, recently just got a Case on the Tui Ling issue, no other choices, but to "get rid" of the Invaded Statue and change to a New One.

Eyes is one of the few important parts that can be used to determine whether this Statue is still "working".

Eyes with no Life for a Statue is just like a Human being diagnose as a Vegetable. And so, if such cases happened, we will need to do Re-enhancement or change to a New statue.

    ReplyDelete
  14. True, very scary indeed. But now need to find d rite person to do dotting in s'pore should be quite hard. But once u got d rite person to do d dotting. It can be quite enriching.

    ReplyDelete
  15. But some very old statue will turn dark.. either covered by dust or after a long period of praying the smoke tend to turn the statue dark... so how to differentiate? Then for the statue, i thought is the craftsmanship problem? (some eyes small/big, fierce/angry/friendly/clam/etc). Also i thought house got door gods? how the warderings check in? So i suppose as long as the family is smooth and got no big problem then the statue should be fine?

    ReplyDelete
  16. "4) Optional Case: For those who engaged Mediums to perform Dotting, please be aware of the Changes of the Statues. After 10-12 years, please do engaged a Taoist Priest to perform at least a Round of Chanting for the Statues (Deities) during the Manifestation Anniversary aka Birthday or during the Thanksgiving Ceremony at the End of Lunar Year (16th Day of Lunar 12 Month 答謝神恩)"

err why is there a need to do so?

    ReplyDelete
  17. say if a statue had a crack at the back, is it due to bad dotting or is it because of praying for a long period of time. and if the statue crack, wat shld we do. will "renovation" and re-dotting of the statue helps?

    ReplyDelete
  18. The things that we mentioned here are different from the Wood's Original Carving or Element.

By a look, usually you will be able to differentiate. Just take the example from the Picture that being posted here, the differences are quite obvious.

As for Eyes and the Expressions, it will change Before & After the Dotting Ceremonies, so for this, Oneself must need to be more observant and careful.

Smooth & Got No Big Problem doesnt mean Good. So certain precautious still needed to be done.

    ReplyDelete
  19. For Mediums, they are just Media for Transmitting Messages and not mend for other Tasks, and so, Oneself must be aware of this Issue.

Dotting being done by Mediums can be Weak as in the Methods and Invitation. Especially Dottings by Mediums done at Night, usually these Statues tend to create "Problems" after 3 Years.

For 10-12 years, is a Normal Cycle for Mediumship & Sintua. Within 10-12 years, Transition will occur and Changes will be experiencing, if Oneself is not Aware, Negative After-effects will be encountered and some can be Fatal.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Both are Involved.

Crack immediately after Dotting, there is considered Bad-dotting and so, immediate changing of Statue is needed and the Person who is performing the Dotting must be Changed and Forever NO engaging of this Person.

Crack after inviting back, within the Period of 49 Days, then this is considered Bad Dotting too.

Crack within 3 Years, meaning the Energies have "Left", new replacement is needed.

Crack after 3 Years, meaning that the Statues that Oneself got from the Shop is not in Good Quality, so in the future, try to avoid getting Statues from that Shop.

  21. Shifu, just curious...in case if the urn "Fa Lu" or the incenses falls and burn the statue (if the urn is put too near the statue)...is it better to repair the statue or change a new statue?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Usually when we placed the Urn, we will try to have a Safe distance in-between. But if it is still SO unlucky to have the Incense fall onto the Statue, then we will need to see how serious the result is.

For eg: the Whole Beard burnt, then repair will be needed. but if it is just a little round spot burnt, then it can be ignore.

But before sending for Repair, etc, another Round of Quick Ceremony will be needed.

  23. O tht is a very interesting topic. In fact, last time my parent place used to have a couple of chinese deities statues. After worshipping for a while, the statues either crack or have a lot of wrinkle on its faces. We always wonder why. We always thought it was due to lousy craftmanship. However, my mum used to dream of those deities giving her 4 D which she would strike. Therefore, are those deities good or bad ? Any advise

    ReplyDelete
  24. For long timing of honouring, the statues will tend to get "old", so maybe its time to perform some Repairing for them to look Good & "young".

    ReplyDelete
  25. There's another dimension to bad 開光點眼, and that's when it's done by a Daoist master/priest who IS credentialed, but they do it in a sloppy or lazy way. I once saw a monk at a famous temple do a "Dotting", but when the 神像 rolled off the altar on its own, he didn't start over or realize this might be an issue! He just picked the image off the floor and kept going...

Jave, what would you do in that situation? Start over or recommend not to do 開光?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Nowadays, what's the usual donation in Singapore for "Dotting"?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yes, for this, the dotting will needed to cease and then a round of new report must be done.

Usually after falling onto the floor, the statue will be damage, no further proceeding of dotting.

    ReplyDelete
  28. In Singapore, a Normal Dotting's "Donation" can go up to S$380.00 per Statue. This is why, lesser People is engaging "Priests" or "Taoist Masters" to perform Dotting, cos Black-sheeps are Out in the Market to do distorting of the Culture.

For Official Priests, we can only Get whatever People presented to us.

    ReplyDelete
  29. hi Shifu,

can you see and check a statues by photo?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm from Indonesia, and I think 30 years before did not have any taoist priest in many small place same like my village (kampung). And many dotting is perform by TangKi or Old person who is maybe have some skill but can not identify him is taoist priest / master / teachers.. So how we see this?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Some people tell, could be place the new statue in the temple, for 30 days or ..., then can bring back to home for praying.., this can?

    ReplyDelete
  32. For this, you all will have to be careful, so other than Official Priests or Taoist Master, NO other People can perform Dotting, this applies to Mediums too.

In order to know whether the Person you engage is Official or Not, you will need to do some observation on him/her, this may take Time, but spending a little time to exchange back Good Blessing, this is worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Not Really Good.

This is a common mistake that alot of Folks made.

Home Statues (new or redoing dotting) shall be placed at home 21-49 days before the actual dotting and 21-49 days after the dotting to check on the Energies Flow.

A Good Official Taoist Master will do that or advise oneself to do that, for those who dont follow this Rule, usually they are NOT Official or Properly Trained.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi Bro Jave,

Many people in Jakarta here did not pray any Deity statue at home, They just praying in temple. And many people said it is more good to pray at temple because Deity at temple is more powerfull and pray by more people. What your opinion about this?

    Best Regards, JK

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi JK,

Deities at Temples & Homes provide slightly different Blessings & have different Tasks to perform.

So usually we dont compare them in this Way.

As long as Oneself & the Family is Sincere & Faithful, Deities from anywhere will be the Same.

    ReplyDelete
  36. i have a statue of guan yu and the fu lu shou at our home but i didnt let it to be dotted by someone.the nearest taoist temple would take 2rides.what should i do.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wrap them up and do not display them without any form of honouring. This will only invite Negative Entities into your home.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi jave,
I want to buy a statue of guan yu(a new one) what should the first things that i should do?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Just go to those statue shop and ask the Master there to choose for you. If not, get someone who know to choose for you.

    ReplyDelete
  40. If pictures of deities are not dotted and used decoration only, will it risk being "invaded" by wandering spirits?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yes, its possible to be affected by such negative entities.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Shifu,
What I oberved was that most people will choose a "good date" and than send the statues to temple once they had selected from the shop. So is there any impact.

And what is the purpose of having the statues to place at home for numbers of days.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Shifu,

What is the purpose of having the statues to place at home for number of days.

I saw most of the people will send the statues to temple once the selected from the shop, any different or impact. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  44. Usually that is mend for the statue's energies to merge into the energy of the house, this is to ensure that the deities or the statues suit this family or this premises. And also, to prevent any crushes of energies after dotting.

Usually a trained Taoist Priest or Spiritual Master will encouraged people to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Bad dotting do cause many hidden problems..my friend dad suffer from neck ache for months.
One medium advised them that the monkey god statue they worshipped at home is an empty shell..Then they replaced a new one with help of a master ..amazing the neck ache problem gone..!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yup, indeed it does matter.
I have come across a lot of cases due to bad dotting of statues.
