Pictures of Lord Bei Dou aka Bei Dou Xing Jun (消災七元北斗星君)

Bei Dou Xing Jun (消災七元北斗星君) aka Lord Bei Dou, Bei Dou Qi Yuan Xing Jun (北斗七元星君) or The Nine Emperors of the Northern Hemisphere (九皇星君大天尊).

In Taoism, besides Lord Emperor Chang Sheng Da Di (南極長生大帝) and Lord Nan Dou (延壽六司南斗星君), Bei Dou Xing Jun are the Deities that one self can pay respect to for prolonging of one's life, delaying of the death period and eliminating of one’s debts & sins (延生, 消災﹐注死).

Since our Heavenly Master Zhang Dao Ling (張天師) started his promoting of Taoism, Lord Bei Dou was one of the important Deities that Taoists must pay respect to and because in Taoism, we were a Religion & a form of Teaching that greatly depended on the movement of Stars, Lord Bei Dou was then being highly respected by All Schools, Sects and Taoists (due to the Centered Position of where Lord Bei Dou was being located).

Together with Lord Zuo Fu (左輔) & Lord You Bi (右弼), Lord Bei Dou formed the Nine Emperors Group which was believed to be the 9 sons of Dou Mu Yuan Jun (斗姆元君).

In some contexts, Lord Bei Dou was also being recognized as the Star Lord that being appointed to look after the Element of Water (水行). And so, in some of our Taoist Mantras that associated with the Element of Water, Lord Bei Dou would be mentioned, etc.

As mentioned earlier, due to the position of Lord Bei Dou in the Universe, Lord Bei Dou was being highly respected by Taoists and all Taoist Sects. And because of him position, he was also being appointed by the San Qing (三清道祖) aka The Three Pure One to assist Jade Emperor (玉皇大天尊) in controlling the movements of the Sun, Moon and the Five Important Planets in the Universe (Pluto, Mercury, Mars, Venus & Saturn) – these 7 Planets are being addressed as Qi Zheng (七政) in Religious Contexts.

In Taoist Rituals/Ceremonies, Li Dou (禮斗) or Bai Dou (拜斗) is one of the many Rituals/Ceremonies that is being dedicated to Lord Bei Dou and the other Star Lord Groups.

During the Li Dou or Bai Dou Ritual/Ceremony, the Leading Priest will evoke the energies from Dou Mu Yuan Jun, Lord Emperor Zi Wei (北極紫微大帝), Lord Emperor Tian Huang (西極天皇大帝) and the Nine Stars to be emitted in-order to bless onto the devotees who joined in the Rituals/Ceremonies.

Usually after the evoking of the energies, names of the devotees will be recited to all the Deities that being evoked in-order for them to give the necessary blessings.

In Taoism, once oneself is being claimed that the life-span is going to end soon, by doing a Petition Report to Lord Bei Dou and by placing the 7-Stars Lamp Formation (七星延生燈法), oneself's life-span will somehow be prolonged (according to the merits and cultivation of the oneself, etc).

So who are the 7 Stars in the Lord Bei Dou Group?

Here they are:

  2. Nowadays, being seeing alot of people, most of them are non-Taoists, doing introductions on Lord Bei Dou, to my surprise, most of the introductions contain un-realistic and wrong information.

This does not help in promoting our Precious Taoist Culture but seriously degrading and insulting it...

So in the future, for those who wanted to do intro on Taoist Deities, do be careful on the reseaches.

  3. Does each star has a particular mantra or prayer? Or should we just pray the whole bao gao?

Shifu please explain each star's particular purpose and merit in paying respect to them. Thank you very much.

Shifu there is a rumor that ordinary tua can't have Bei Dou because the energy will be to high especially to Tuas dedicated to Yin Department is this true? because i saw the phrase 司陰府是非之目. Could master also explain in detail the meaning of the Bao Gao for the benefit of all? Thanks.

  4. Yup, each Star got a mantra dedicated to the individual.

Who shall recite the individual mantra? The horoscope that is under the protection of the Star shall recite it.

Usually a Good Spiritual Master will provide the mantra for the individual according to their birthday and so.

Of cos not all tuas can dedicated altars to them, cos not all tuas are able to handle the correct way of honouring them.

As for the phrase, I will explain to you all in the course or class.

In this potrait, you can see the Seven Lords of the Bei Dou Group and the 2 Lords on top are the Zuo Fu & You Bi.

This Potrait is dedicated to the Nine Emperors of the Northern Heaven.

  12. Bei Dou Xing Jun & Nan Dou Xing Jun are they part of the Nine Emperor Gods? I am pretty confuse with that. I am also very curious to know how do Nine Emperor Gods look like, usually in all of the Nine Emperor Gods festivals, the god's statue(s) are kept "secret". Either placed in the sedan chair or inside the inner shrine which is restricted to commoners. I would like to also know who is that god holding a "sword" on the right hand and on the left hand holding a rooster if i remember clearly. That statue is always being placed in the center of the main altar and can be commonly seen in many Nine Emperor Gods temple.

  13. Bei Dou Xing Jun is a Individual Statue made to represent the Nine Emperors. Whereas Nan Dou Xing Jun is made to represent the 6 Star Lords in the Southern Pole.

No such Statue that hold Sword or Rooster, that is to represent Demon or Wandering Souls. So usually for Official Taoists, we dont pay respect to such Statues.

Some more to clarify, Nine Emperors are Not Secret, cos Folks Culture worried that People might know that they are not Honouring the Actual Nine Emperors but the Wandering Souls, so they try to avoid People from going near. This is one Serious Issue that as Taoist, we shall know.

I am not quite clear about this. Can you explain further?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Very True.

The one that we see now during Nine Month is not honouring the Actual Nine Stars but the Sea Pirates or Bandits. And this is why, they needed to go out into the Far Sea to invite the Spirits into the Sedan Chairs.

Due to Folks are not being educate correctly and so, they have mix up the 2 groups together which somehow degraded the Upright Culture of Taoism.

  16. Oh I see. What an information! Thank you very much for your explanation. Then Lord Bei Dou is the real nine emperor god? When do we celebrate his day?

  24. In your posting (photo section) with title "Deities Birthday and Celebration of Wuzi year Lunar 8 Month" I found 八月初三日北斗星君聖誕. Was it valid only for Wuzi year?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes, in Normal Chinese Society, People will honour Bei Dou on 3rd Day of Lunar 8 Month, but in Main Stream Taoism, we will do it on the 9 Month. So I think it will be better to stick the Main Stream Taoism Method.

    ReplyDelete
  26. ah ic ic. I understand now. Thank you :-)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Shifu, is Main Stream Taoism is identical to Zheng Yi Dao Jiao? Is there also Sub Stream Taoism? Thx in advance for the explanation.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes, Main Stream Taoism is known as Zheng Yi Dao or Tian Shi Dao. Under Zheng Yi Dao, there are more than 70 Sub Schools.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 1996, Year of Rat, so your Protector will be Tian Shu Yang Ming Tan Lang Tai Xing Jun (天樞陽明貪狼太星君), which is the 1st Star in the Nine Emperor Group.

  32. For this, you will need to honour Lord Wen Chang, which is your profile picture. Usually you will need to go thru a Ritual/Ceremony to get the blessing from Lord Wen Chang. I'm sure, temples in your hometown shall have such Ritual/Ceremony.

  33. other than that what can boost my study luck?
    :)

  34. For this, you can do 3-9 kowtows in front of the Deities daily. This will assist in opening up the wisdom.
If not, recite the Wisdom Opening Mantra of Lord Wen Chang at this link:

  35. Dear Shifu, I would like to pray for my father who has a serious terminal illness, to help him to prolong his life.

He is born in the year of the monkey. Besides reciting the Bei Dou Xing Jun Bao Gao, is there anything else I should do? Can you explain what is the 7-Stars Lamp Formation (七星延生燈法)?
