Above is the picture of the Tomb of Master Chun Yang.
Lv Chun Yan (呂純陽) aka Master Lv (純陽祖師), real name known as Lv Yan (呂嚴) or Lv Dong Bin (呂洞賓), born in Tang Dynasty, 14th Day of Lunar 4 Month (生于唐貞觀年農曆四月十四日).
According to records, Master Lv was the reincarnation of an Ancient Deity known as Huang Tan Shi (古聖皇覃氏化身).
At 46 years old, he managed to meet up with his master, Master Zhong Li Quan (鐘離權), from then, he followed Master Zhong Li Quan to Mountian Zhong Nan (終南山) to do his self-cultivation.
64 years old, he got his enlightenment, from then, he got an official title of Premier of Yu Qing aka Yu Qing Shang Xiang (玉清上相) or Fu You Di Jun (孚佑帝君).
And according to Chinese History, due to the chaotic Religions Society in late Tang Dynasty, Master Lv had to start (founded) a new Religion or Teaching of combining of the Three Chinese Religions together, and this Teaching was later known as San Jiao 三教 - 儒釋道合一 (The Three Religions).
He is also one of the popular character in The Eight Immortals aka Ba Xian (八仙).

ReplyDeleteWow! Shi Fu...that being the case...how do we classify the remaining "八仙" ? since "呂洞賓" is an advisor to the "玉清" which i shld say a pretty high position...I saw the blog titling the "八仙" as Demigods? what does that mean???hahahahah...pls help.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha.. to be more accurate, story on Ba Xian is only a myth and these 8 Immortals have never come together as a group before.
ReplyDeleteAccording to some records, actually these 8 Immortals refer to a group of 8 men who survived thru the killing of the cruel officers during the Ming Dynasty.
After being able to escape from the killing (on boat,in the mid sea) the 8 men swam across the big sea to an Island, after reaching, folks on the Island were shocked to know that they were from China Mainland, from then, the folks of the Island treated them as Heros and after their death, the Islanders respect them as Deities.
In order to make the myth more lively and colorful, some other Sects pull in the Eight Immortals (that we know now) into the myth of Crossing the Sea.

Why Ba Xian are consider as Demigods, cos the 8 of them are true historical characters - meaning human, after years of cultivation and testing, they got their enlightenment.. this is why, in some contexts, they are not treated as the same as like other Deities.
Wow! interesting facts...hear it for the very first time.......any information on the 8 men being respected as Deities; their curent name?
ReplyDeleteDue to they are people who escape from the killing in the mid-sea, so no names were provided (if not, the Ming Imperial Officers would killed them on the Island)...
