Introduction of Fu De Zheng Shen (南天御封福德正神)

Fu De Zheng Shen (福德正神) aka Earth Deity, in Chinese, we addressed him as Tu Di Gong (土地公) or Tu Di Shen (土地神) or She Ji Shen (社稷神), in S.E.A., we called him Da Bo Gong (大伯公) - meaning the Great Granduncle.

Till today, a lot of people still tend to mix-up Fu De Zheng Shen and Hou Tu (後土) together, to be more accurate, this is not right.

Hou Tu, is one of the Si Yu 四御 (The Four Heavenly Emperor Lords that assist San Qing 三清 in looking after the Universe). He(she) is one of the High Position Deities after the Universe being formed/created.

Due to the task of Hou Tu was to look after all the Earth Issues (such as Mountains, Hills, Farm, Ground, etc), folks tend to treat him(her) as Tu Di Shen.

Besides that, in Folks Belief (民間信仰) and Feng Shui (風水學) point of view on Tu Di Shen, actually there's a few versions, they are:

1) Tu Di Shen holding to a Wooden Walking Stick (木拐土地) -> to look after the tombs or cementary

2) Holding to a Ru Yi and Ingot (如意土地) -> to look after Fortune in a Home

3) etc.

Tu Di is one of the assistants or surbodinates of him(her), but not necessary for Tu Di to report to him(her).

  14. Shifu, what is the different between Fu De Zheng Shen and 大伯公? Are they the same person? I got confuse after reading this article : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tua_Pek_Kong

    ReplyDelete
  15. Please ignore the Wiki Article, cos most of the time, Wiki always providing the Wrong Info on Chinese Religions & Culture.

Fu De Zheng Shen is the Main & Official Title for Earth Deity and this Title only refer to the Initial Fu De Zheng Shen, other than that, ALL other Tu Di aka Earth Deity are known as Tu Di Gong or Tu Di Shen.

Da Bo Gong is a Addressing Term that South East Asia Taoists given to Tu Di Gong.

  16. thank you so much for the explanation, shifu...

  17. So when we worship Fu De Zheng Shen, we put it on the altar. The Ti zu Kong, on the floor.
What about Tu Di Kong or Tu Di Shen?
Is the Tua Pek Kong is also another form of Tu Di Kong or Tu Di Shen?
I was told that if one worship Tua Pek Kong, one does not need to worship Ti Zu Kong. Is this correct?

  19. Hi Master, I have a photograph of Fu De Zheng Shen (Tua Pek Kong) with his civil and military assistants which I am thinking of pasting onto the altar wall for honouring. Does the photograph need to go through any enhancement or Kai Guang before it can be honoured or just passing over the temple urn three times will do? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes, it need to be dotted just like any other statues.

    ReplyDelete
  21. How about if I collect the incense ash from the temple in a red packet and write Fu De Zheng Shen on the red packet? Is this method feasible?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thats is only to continue the lineage of the Fu De's Energy from the Temple, not to enhance the empty Picture.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Sorry, what I meant was that, if I want to honor Fu De Zheng Shen, but not convenient to install another statue at this time, can the incense ash packet be honoured instead of a statue for the time being? Also, I noticed that many temples in China and Taiwan have flags for devotees to invite home for worship. Does the flag represent the presence of the deity in such cases?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I see, ok, if for this case, you may invite back the ashes or flags to honour.
